Are you considering this course?

This course is designed for engineering staff who are directly involved in the management, supervision, or auditing of safe work systems involving pressure equipment. It specifically focuses on boiler or other mechanical systems that store pressure and contain a relevant fluid as defined by the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR).

Course Objective:

This course aims to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to support the decision-making process as an Authorised Person (Mechanical & Pressure Systems). Additionally, you will learn how to implement and maintain safe systems of work for boiler and stored pressure mechanical systems in accordance with relevant statutory legislation and guidance.

The course focuses on the safe systems of work stipulated by JSP375 Part 2, Volume 3, Chapter 4 (Mechanical Systems), which is widely adopted throughout industry as best engineering safe practice for pressure systems, and is required by those who will later be assessed and appointed as Authorised Person for Mechanical & Pressure Systems by their own organisation.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise and apply relevant legislation and guidance when implementing and controlling safe work systems.
  • Understand the essential physical properties of relevant fluids (as defined by the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000), and the fundamental technical aspects of associated equipment and systems.
  • Identify the functions of key components and safety features in stored pressure mechanical systems.
  • Identify, assess, record and manage hazards and risks by producing and reviewing appropriate risk assessment documentation.
  • Understand and implement managerial and operational arrangements, safety rules and procedures, (in accordance with JSP 375, Vol 3, Chapter 4).
  • Comprehend the defined roles and responsibilities of an Authorised Person, Skilled Person and the Person in Charge in relation to Mechanical and Pressure Systems.
  • Select and implement appropriate isolation methods for pressure systems (in accordance with HSG 253: the Safe Isolation of Plant and Equipment and JSP 375, Vol 3, Chapter 4).
  • Complete the necessary and appropriate documentation to control a safe system of work (including Safety Program & Statement of Isolation, Permit to Work, and Standing Instruction).
  • Understand how to assess and appoint Skilled Persons (MPS).
  • Comprehend the importance of being familiar with site installations, site-specific procedures, demarcation agreements, monitoring and the audit process.
